Heating Care

Preparing your heating system for the cold season

A few simple homeowner routines before the first cold night can help a furnace or heat pump run more evenly and help you spot issues worth asking a professional about.

Seasonal startup checks you can do yourself

Before you switch from cooling to heating, take ten minutes to walk through the basics. These checks are visual and do not require opening sealed equipment panels.

  • Replace or inspect the air filter so airflow is not restricted.
  • Clear storage boxes and clutter at least a few feet from the furnace or air handler.
  • Make sure supply registers and return grilles are open and unblocked.
  • Test your carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if needed.
  • Switch the thermostat to heat and confirm warm air arrives within a few minutes.

Thermostat settings for heating months

Many homeowners find a steady setpoint during waking hours and a modest setback overnight works well. Heat pumps often perform best with smaller setbacks, so check your equipment documentation before using large temperature swings.

Signs worth noting

Unusual odors that persist, repeated short cycling, a pilot or ignition that will not stay lit, or rooms that never reach temperature are good reasons to write down details and consult a licensed HVAC professional.
