Cooling Care

Getting your cooling system ready for warm weather

Spring is a good time to look over your air conditioner or heat pump so the first hot week does not catch you off guard.

Outdoor unit clearance

Outdoor condensers need open space to move air. Trim back plants, clear leaves and grass clippings, and keep roughly two feet of open space around the unit.

  • Remove debris from the top and sides of the outdoor unit.
  • Confirm the unit sits level on its pad.
  • Look for bent fins or visible damage and note it for a professional.
  • Never hose the unit while it is running or open electrical panels.

Indoor checks

Fresh filters, open registers, and a clear condensate drain area help indoor comfort. If you notice water pooling near the indoor unit, turn the system off and seek professional guidance.

Comfortable cooling habits

Ceiling fans set to rotate counterclockwise, closed blinds on sunny sides of the home, and a consistent thermostat setpoint can make warm days feel more manageable.
